"أنا رجل مريض... أنا رجل شرير... أنا بالأحرى رجل منفر". "مذكرات قبو" هي سجل يوميات، ساردها شخص مرير ومنعزل، وهو موظف بسيط متقاعد، يعيش في مدينة بيترسبورغ.
في هذه الرواية، يصف دوستويفسكي العوالم الداخلية لإنسان لا يجد لنفسه موقعاً في كنف المجتمع، ومن ثم يأخذ في صب جام غضبه وحقده ومخاوفه-انطلاقاً من مسكنه المعتم الذي يقع في قبو أرضي-على الطبيعة البشرية.
إن مأساة هذا الإنسان المُهان والحقود هي وعيه ورغبته في مستقبل أفضل، وهي في الوقت ذاته، إدراكه لاستحالة تحقق ذلك. إذ حتى حب ليزا له، وصفحها عنه، وهي تلك الفتاة التي ما فتئ يهينها، حتى ذلك الحب الذي كان من الممكن أن يغير فيه شيئاً، ويفتح له طريقاً نحو حياة سعيدة، ظلّ بطلنا يرفضه، مفضلاً الانزواء في قبوه، مسجوناً في قمقم كبريائه الجريحة، وعزة نفسه المهانة، ونزعته الشريرة، وسخطه، ومرارته...
لقد اعتبرت رواية "مذكرات قبو"، بتأثيرها البين على فكر بعض الكتاب الكبار، من قبيل نيتشه وكامو وكافكا، واحدة من بين المؤلفات الوجودية الأولى.
