انتمى إدوارد سعيد (1935- 2003) إلى تلك القلّة من النقّاد والمنظّرين والمفكّرين الّذين يسهل تحديد قسماتهم الفكريّة الكبرى ومناهجهم وأنظمتهم المعرفيّة وإنشغالاتهم، ولكن يصعب على الدوام حصرهم في مدرسة تفكير محدّدة، ذلك لأنّه كان نموذجاً رفيعاً للمثقّف الّذي يعيش عصره على نحو جدليّ، ويُدرج إشكاليّة الظواهر على جدول أعمال العقل، ويُخضع ملَكة التفكير لناظم معرفيّ ومنهجيّ مركزيّ هو النقد؛ ولقد غاص عميقاً في الأبعاد التاريخيّة للحداثة وفي ملفّاتها الثقافيّة - الإجتماعيّة، وكان في طليعة من فتحوا ملفّات الإستشراق والتخييل حول الشرق، وأعادوا إستكشاف خطابات ما بعد الإستعمار، وتلمّسوا حقّ التابع في تمثيل الذات إزاء سرديّات الإمبراطوريّة وثقافات الإمبرياليّة.
وفصول هذا الكتاب تُعنى أساساً بشخصيّة سعيد الناقد، ليس لأنّها الأبرز ضمن حصيلة منجزه المتعدّد الزاخر فحسب، بل كذلك لأنّها - على الأرجح - ما تزال الأقلّ وضوحاً في ذهن القارئ العربيّ العريض.
