اشتملتْ مكتبتُنا التراثية على طائفة من الخزائن الأدبيّة والتاريخيّة، إلا أنّ كتاب الصَّفدي: «الوافي بالوفيات» بمجلداته الثلاثين، كانَ من أضخمها وأثراها، لما اشتمل عليه من امتدادٍ زمكانيٍّ وتنوُّعٍ في طبقات المترجَمين وشرائحهم، وحفظٍ لطائفة من نقول المصادر القديمة المفقودة. وقد استشعر ابن حجر العسقلاني أهميّة هذا الكتاب فاختصرهُ بكتابٍ وسمهُ بـ «تجريد الوافي بالوفيات»، اقتصرَ فيه على اسم المترجَم وتاريخ مولده ووفاته وأبرز ما يرتبطُ بشخصيته العلمية أو الاجتماعية، وقد حفظَ لنا عدداً من التراجم التي أخلّتْ بها طبعتا الوافي بالوفيات، ممّا جعلَ استخلاص هذه التراجم وإبرازها للقراء، أمراً ضروريّاً ومسوّغاً علميّاً. وقد قدّم المحقِّق لذلك بدراسة اشتملتْ على نقدٍ علميٍّ رصين لمطبوعة «تجريد الوافي بالوفيات»، التي كانتْ أنموذجاً للتحقيق غير المنهجي، وزيادة في تقديم الفائدة، فقد أرفق خمسة نصوص محققة في سيرة الصلاح الصّفدي، تنشر أوّل مرّة.
