في ذلك الوقت حدث حادث له أهميته، فصلاح الدين، الذي غدا سيد كل الساحل تقريباً، وقف ثاني يوم النصر الذي هزَّ أوروبا القلقة هزة مؤلمة، أمام قلة مقاتلة متخندقة وراء صخرة صور، فتقرر على ما يظهر حظ صلاح الدين السياسي. كانت الامور الكبيرة قد أنجزت، وقوة صلاح الدين ما زالت تتنامى، فأعاد الوحدة السورية، كما ترسخت من النيل الى دجلة أركان الأمبراطورية الأيوبية سنة بعد سنة، فامتلك صلاح الدين ثلاث عواصم القاهرة ودمشق وحلب. وتملقته بغداد تملق الموجس خوفاً، واعترفت الموصل، بؤرة الفتن التقليدية ضد الشاميين، بسلطته. ولكن بعد صور، وإثر حادث عكا العاثرة الحظ والتي لم يستطع صلاح الدين إنقاذ حاميتها، إنتهت حياته السياسية. ومما كان أشد وطأة عليه مساومة ملك انكلترا المحتال، الذي جاء في آخر لحظة بلا نصر حاسم باهر، والذي تمكن مع ذلك أن يتعاقد تعاقد الند للند مع صلاح الدين الذي لم ينتصر عليه في ساحة القتال، ولكن عرف كيف يستنزفه وهو يجرّه من مفاوضة الى مفاوضة حتى هذا الصلح الشهير صيف 1192م الذي استقبله الجميع بحماسة. ويلاحظ أن الحماسة الدينية لدى صلاح الدين لم تكن أبداً، منذ صور، أقوى مما هي عليه الآن، فقد كانت تتملكه غيرة دينية شديدة. لقد قرأ هو نفسه لأولاده كتيب في العقيدة الإسلامية جمعه له خصيصاً قطب الدين النيسابوري. وحينما لم يكن يستطيع المشاركة في صلاة الجمعة كان يستدعي الإمام، إن كان مريضاً يكره نفسه على الوقوف لأداء الصلاة. كان يحصي إحصاءً دقيقاً أيام صومه، وحينما يمضي الليل في خيمته الحربية، كان يأمر حارسه بأن يتلو عليه أياً من الذكر الحكيم، وفيما كان الفرنجة يتلقون إمدادات جديدة في عكا، شرع ملكان بالتوجه الى الأرض المقدسة التي كان صلاح الدين أعاد فتحها، وأبان ذلك كان يتردد في المشرق شائعة مفادها أن البابا نفسه سيشترك في الحملة الصليبية ضد صلاح الدين.
