يتناول هذه الكتاب التحولات الصوتية في بنية الاسم عند التثنية وجمعي المذكر والمؤنث السالمين والتصغير والنسب وما يرافق ذلك من أثر في بنية الكلمة وتحديد المسائل الصرفية لهذه الظاهرة وتفسيرها وبيان رأي علماء العربية القدماء في دراسة مسائل هذه الظاهرة بالإضافة إلى تفسيرها في ضوء علم اللغة المعاصر.
ولما كان موضوع الكتاب لم يدرس دراسة وافية ومستقلة من قبل فقد ارتأيت أن أبسط البحث فيه وأدرسه دراسة علمية في ضوء علم اللغة المعاصر، فليس هناك دراسة متخصصة ومفصلة في هذا الموضوع - في حدود ما أعلم- واقتصرت التوجيهات عند القدماء على آراء متفرقة ومتناثرة فوفقوا في بعضها وأخفقوا في الأخرى، أما عند المحدثين فقد وردت توجيهات قصيرة و سريعة في بحوث متعددة، لذا ارتأيت أن أبسط البحث فيها من حيث عرض توجيهات القدماء والمحدثين وإيضاحاتهم وتصوراتهم في تفسير ما يخصها من ظواهر لغوية وصوتية، ومحاولاً إيجاد تفسير صوتي لهذه المسائل في ضوء علم اللغة المعاصر.
واعتمدت في كتابي هذا على أمّات كتب الصرف والنحو، مثل: الكتاب لسيبويه، وشرح الشافية للرضي الأستراباذي، وشرح المفصل لابن يعيش والممتع في التصريف لابن يعيش ومن المراجع الحديثة التي اعتمدت عليها المنهج الصوتي للبنية العربية لعبد الصبور شاهين والدراسات اللهجية والصرفية عند ابن جني لحسام النعيمي وغيرها.
وأفدت من أبحاث مثل : ظاهرة التخلص من التقاء الساكنين في العربية الفصحى لعبد القادر مرعي، وتأملات في ظواهر الحذف الصرفي لفوزي الشايب وغيرهما، كما أفدت من الرسائل الجامعية مثل : أثر القوانين الصوتية في بناء الكلمة العربية لفوزي الشايب، وأثر الحركة المزدوجة في بنية الكلمة العربية لعبد الله كنعان والإعلال في ضوء علم اللغة المعاصر لمحمود خريسات وغيرها.
