قضى أيام شبابه في مكافحة الإستعمار البريطاني، دخل السجن وكان أول سجين سياسي، استفاد من السجن للخلوة والإنقطاع للعبادة وفق طريق النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، هدفه البحث عن الذات والوصول إلى الحقيقة، في الفكر الإسلامي الواعي، لثورة التغيير في السودان أولاً، ثم للبشرية جمعاء، من أجل قضية التغيير هذه واجه ألد أعداء التغيير، الطائفية، دعاة الفكر السلفي، بكل شجاعة ووضوح، وجرأة العالم، وقد تواروا عن مواجهته، وعملوا ضده في الخفاء، تأمروا على حياته، فأضحى أول شهيد للإسلام والفكر بعد عهود الظلام، ولبسوا ثوب العار من بعده.
