يشتمل هذا الكتاب على معلومات توضح ماهية حصاد المياه لأغراض الزراعة لا سيما في المناطق الجافة. خاصة وإن ندرة المياه في العديد من البلدان تقترب من مستوياتها الحرجة. يناقش الكتاب العوامل التي تساعد، أو تعوق نشر تقنية حصاد المياه. كما تم توضيح مفهوم حصاد المياه وتعريفه واختلافه عن ممارسات الحفاظ على التربة والمياه التقليدية، كما يوضح الفرق بين حصاد المياه الطبيعي وحصاد المياه الاصطناعي. كما اشتمل أيضاً على شرح لأهم طرق حصاد المياه والتقنيات المتبعة في توفير المياه في مجال الزراعة، وأوضح أيضا بأن بعض التقنيات المستخدمة متشابهة فيما بينها، على الرغم من أن حصاد المياه يبدو بسيط للغاية، إلا أنه لا يمكن تنفيذه في جميع مناطق الأراضي الجافة. وعليه تم توضيح أهمية بعض المعايير في تحديد المناطق المناسبة لحصاد المياه مثل خصائص الأمطار، والغطاء النباتي، والتضاريس ونوع التربة وعمقها.
