يقدم هذا الكتاب واحداً من أهم الإنجازات الفكرية تعبيراً عن المنظور الصهيوني في رؤيته للعقل والتاريخ العربي المعاصر، وأكثرها شمولاً في التناول، من خلال تناوله بالتفصيل لتاريخ الإنقلابات التي شهدها المشرق العربي... 37 إنقلاباً ومحاولة إنقلاب شهدتها مصر وسوريا والعراق والأردن ولبنان واليمن والسودان على مدى ثلاثين عاماً، إبتداء من إنقلاب بكر صدقي في العراق عام 1936، وحتى عام 1966، وهو يتعرض للتكوين الفكري للضباط الذين قادوا تلك الإنقلابات منذ بدء عملهم السري وتطويره بعد وصولهم إلى الحكم، وكذلك إنجازاتهم.
ويتناول الكتاب - ضمن موضوعات أخرى كثيرة - التطور التاريخي لسلك الضباط العرب في البلاد محل البحث، والتأثير العثماني والتركي على نشأته الأولى، ويفرد فصولاً خاصة لمناقشة أفكار القادة العرب من الضباط من أصحاب الرؤى المتكاملة... "الصباغ" في العراق... جمال عبد الناصر... أفكار "البعث".
ويعقد عدداً من المقارنات بين إنقلابات المنطقة وإنقلابات مناطق أخرى مثل أمريكا اللاتينية وجنوب شرقي آسيا، ويختتم الكتاب بدراسة تتناول 87 ضابطاً من شهداء 1948، في محاولة للوصول إلى الأصول الإجتماعية والعائلية لسلك الضباط العربي.
إن القراءة النقدية لهذا الكتاب مهمة للغاية بالنسبة للمهتمين بالصراع العربي الإسرائيلي ودارسي التاريخ والعلوم الإجتماعية، والمهتمين بالسياسة، والمثقفين بشكل عام.
