العزلة اصطلاح غائر في أعماق عالم ماركيز انطلاقاً من عالمه الخاص انسياباً إلى بناه الرواية. والعزلة في عالم ماركيز تتجاوز كونها حالة، إنها تضرب جذورها، تتعمق تتكاثف، تتبلور تصبح في النهاية طريقة حياة، فقد ومنهاج استجابة في مواجهة الدوافع السياسية والاقتصادية الخارجية، تنتقل من كونها لعنة إلى انكفاء سلوكي يترجم المحتوى العقلي في شكل انكماش ازاء العالم الخارجي حتى التفاني والتحوّل إلى رماد. وقوقعة العزلة لن تتحطم إلا حين يتصاعد الصراع فيغدو تطاحناً حتى الموت في مواجهة الاغتراب عن الطبيعة والآخرين والذات. إن تهشّم القوقعة لا يحدث إلا في حالة واحدة فحسب؛ حين يغدو بداخلها كائن آخر مختلف كيفياً عن سابقه، كائن نجح، ولو لمرة واحدة، في أن يحدق متجرداً في وجه اغترابه.
