إن الصوت اللغوي يعد المكوّن الرئيس الذي تعتمد عليه المكونات اللغوية الأخرى، بدءاً من التشكيل البنيوي للمفردة المعجمية، وإنتهاء بالدلالة التي هي مال الباث، ومسعاه مروراً بالإطار المنطقي، الذي يُعرف بالتركيب النحوي المستند في نظامه إلى العلاقات الإسنادية، والتخصيصية والنسبية، حيث النحو الذي هو إنتحاء مقاييس مستقاة من الكلام الجاري على السنة المتكلمين بذلك المنحى، يرتكز على الربط بين الصوت والدلالة أي البنيتين السطحية والعميقة.
وبعدما وجد المؤلف أن المكتبة الصوتية العربية تفتقر إلى هذا المنحى الدراسي، إرتأى ترجمة هذا الكتاب القيّم المرسوم بــ Generative Phonology لمؤلفه Sanford D.Schane وقد إقتناه من المعرض الدائم في جامعة قاريونس بالجماهيرية الليبية.
يوفر هذا الكتاب المبادئ الضرورية لمَن يرغب في متابعة عمله وفي الأدبيات التي تخص علم اللغويات المعاصر؛ فإن هذا الكتاب لا يتعمق في وصف التفصيلات الدقيقة جداً لبنية الوظيفة الصوتية للغة معيّنة، بل يتفحص خصائص الأنظمة الصوتية للغات كافية، وبطبيعة الحال لا تستطيع النظرية العامة للنظام الصوتي الوقوف على كل ما يحدث في لغات معيّنة، أو ما هو عام في الأنظمة الصوتية للغات كافة.
