بعد التحول من العمالة العضلية واليدوية إلى العمالة العقلية والمعرفية، يتغير دور الفرد في مجتمع التعددية الجديدة. فالمؤسسات التعددية الجديدة في المجتمع، هي عبارة عن تنظيمات من "العمال المعرفيين". هؤلاء العمال المعرفيون تكون لديهم القدرة على الحركة. وهم "زملاء" داخل المؤسسة، ولهم وضعهم الاجتماعي والاقتصادي. كما أنهم يتمتعون بالقوة التفاوضية، النابعة من المساواة الاجتماعية، ومن كونهم يشكلون ضرورة اقتصادية، ومن ثم، يكون علينا أن نعيد تفكيرنا وتعريفنا بالنسبة لكل من حقوق وواجبات العمالة المعرفية، في المجتمع التعددي، وفي مؤسساته. ستصبح وظيفة الفرد من بين حقوق ملكيته. واليوم، مضت العديد من الدول المتطورة معرفيا بعيداً في هذا الاتجاه. والمحاكم الأمريكية تنظر إلى وظيفة العامل باعتبارها نوعاً من الممتلكات.
