يعتبر مفهوم المجتمع المدني من أكثر المفاهيم التي لقيت رواجا كبير سواء في الدراسات السياسية المعاصرة، وهو يعد كذلك من أكثر المفاهيم استخداما في الخطابات السياسية والتداول الإعلامي في العديد من دول العالم خلال العقود الأخيرة من القرن العشرين، واستمر هذا الاستخدام الواسع لمفهوم المجتمع المدني خلال العقدين الأولين للقرن الواحد والعشرين. وقد ارتبط هذا الرواج والانتشار الكبير لمفهوم المجتمع المدني بظاهرة التحولات الديمقراطية التي شهدتها دول عديدة في مختلف أنحاء العالم، لاسيما في دول أوربا الشرقية وأمريكا اللاتينية. ومنذ أواخر الثمانينيات امتد رواج هذا المفهوم إلى الدول العربية، حيث أصبح مفهوم المجتمع المدني من أكثر المصطلحات استعمالا في الخطابات السياسية العربية، وبصفة خاصة في الدول التي عرفت إجراء إصلاحات سياسية على غرار الجزائر، ومصر، ولبنان، والأردن، والكويت...وغيرها.
