نعرف أن هناك أكثر من تحديد للبلاغة، لكن ما يميز المقاربة البلاغية من غيرها من المقاربات النصية هو أنها تنظر إلى النص من زاوية تأثيره في الملتقى؛ تتحرك البلاغة في هذه المسافة بين النص والملتقى؛ تتساءل عن كيفيات التأثير فيه جمالياً وتداولياً. وبذلك يتداخل في التحليل البلاغي ما هو جمالي أو نصي داخلي، بما هو إيديولوجي وتداولي. لكن تاريخ البلاغة لم يكن في جميع الأحوال مؤيداً لهذا التداخل؛ فهناك من يقيدها بدرس ما هو إقناعي في النص (بلاغة الحجاج)، وهناك من يحصرها في درس الوجوه والصور التي تحسن النص وتزينه (بلاغة الإسلوب)، من هنا كان من الضروري التنبيه في هذا التقديم، إلى أن اقترن البلاغة بالأدب- كما هو مثبت في عنوان الكتاب- ليس أمراً واضحاً كل الوضوح.
