جاء اسمه في نسخة الأصل، ونسخة فيض الله أفندي، ونسخة جار الله بعنوان "كتاب القواعد الكلية"، وذكره الذهبي، وابن السبكي، واليافعي، وحاجي خليفة أيضاً بعنوان "كتاب القواعد"، لكن ابن العماد، والسيوطي ذاكره بعنوان "كتاب الفوائد".
لذلك، يمكن أن يقال إنه اشتهر بين العلماء ياسمين، فغالباً ما ذكر بعنوان "القواعد" وأحياناً بعنوان "الفوائد".
ويتحدث المؤلف في هذا الكتاب عن علم المنطق، وعلم الخلاف، وعلم أصول الفقه، وعلم أصول الدين على نحو مختصر، كما أنه ذكر في مقدمة الكتاب ما نصه: "فهذا مختصر لطيف الحجم بديع النظم ضمنتُه القواعد الكليّة في جملة من الفنون العلميّة... وهو على التحقيق خلاصة جُلّ الفنون العلميّة، وزبدة قواعدها الكليّة والجزئيّة".
على حسب إطلاعنا فإن المؤلف قد اختصر كتاب المحصول للرازي في قسم أصول الفقه؛ لأن هيكلة هذا القسم وأبوابه بشكل عام هي نفسها في كتاب المحصول، لكنه قد عمد إلى تحقيق المسائل، كما ذكر ابواب المحصول أحياناً ضمن باب واحد، وانتقد بعض آراء الرازي، وليس ثمة ما يشير إلى كون الأقسام الأخرى من الكتاب أيضاً مختصرات لكتب بعينها أم مختصرات مستقلة.
