Beyrouth, à l’instar d’autres métropoles arabes et méditerranéennes, participe aux dynamiques de la mondialisation contemporaine grâce aux migrations internationales. Les dynamiques de la mondialisation "par le haut" et "par le bas" se croisent, se côtoient et s’ignorent dans la capitale.
Les migrantes non arabes – éthiopiennes, philippines ou sri lankaises –, qui viennent travailler à Beyrouth comme domestique, introduisent dans les interstices urbains, de nouvelles altérités et de nouvelles pratiques, devenant ainsi des actrices inattendues dans et de la ville. "Hyper visibilité" et "invisibilité sociale" vont alors de pair ; le degré de visibilité interrogeant de facto le "droit à la ville" et la légitimité à se montrer, à être vu et à être reconnu.
La migration reste organisée officiellement pour s’inscrire uniquement dans le cadre d’une domesticité low cost, une mobilité "invisibilisée" fondée sur un turn over très rapide. Cependant, les migrantes, par leur nombre et par contournement de leurs conditions initiales d’accueil, se sont imposées dans la capitale, dépassant partiellement les distinctions entre centre et périphérie. Nouvelles figures de la citadinité beyrouthine, elles participent dans les interstices de la ville à sa « réinvention », dans le contexte de forte ségrégation et de fragmentation qui caractérise la capitale libanaise. Elles interrogent in fine la notion de cosmopolitisme qu’induirait cette coprésence.
