Le jour de la Saint Valentin 2005, l’ancien Premier minister libanais et self-made man, le milliardaire Rafic Hariri, a ete assas-sine a Beyrouth par une puissante explosion qui a aneanti son convoi. Sa mort mobilisa le peuple libanais a travers tout le pays. Le Conseil de Securite des Nations Unies qualifia cet assassinat d’acte de terrorisme international, qui aura d’importantes repercussions dans la region et dans le monde. Une commission d’enquete internationale independante a ete creee par le Conseil afin de trouver les auteurs de ce crime.
Humble cueilleur de fruits au debut de sa vie, Rafic Hariri a d’abord connu la gloire et la fortune comme magnat de l’industrie du batiment en Arabie Saoudite. Premier ministre pendant dix ans, de 1992 a 1998 et de 2000 a 2004, il est generalement connu pour avoir ete a l’origine de la renaissance du Liban après la guerre civile, supervisant la reconstruction de 90% des infrastructures du pays. En 2004, son depart suite a la prolongation forcee du mandate du president de la Republique, Emile Lahoud, a ete percu comme un signe de revolte contre les ingerences syriennes dans les affaires interieures du Liban.
Hariri fut pleure comme grand martyr libanais et sa mort souleva une vague de protestations qui mena au retrait des forces syriennes en avril 2005.
