ولد الكاتب القاص الكبير سعد مكاوي حسن في 6 أغسطس عام 1916 بقرية " الدلاتون " مركز شبين الكوم – محافظة المنوفية ، وعنها صاغ مجموعة قصصية كاملة بعنوان " الماء العكر " بحيث كانت قرية " الدلاتون " ببيئتها والواقع الدائر في أنحائها هي مادة هذه القصص الشيقة .
تلقي تعليمه في مدرسة شبرا الإبتدائية ومدرسة التوفيقية وفؤاد الأول الثانوية ، قرأ كل ما تحتويه مكتبة والده من كتب التراث والتاريخ والأدب ، ومجلدات المجلات الشهرية مثل " المقتطف " ، " الهلال " ، وغيرها ، وحضر ما كان يعقده والده مدرس اللغة العربية من منتدي يومي أمام بيته الريفي وسط حديقة فواكه بسيطة مع الأصدقاء والمتعلمين من الفلاحين وكانت مادة الحديث العقيدة والتصوف والفكر والأدب ، بما شكل وجدان الشاب الصغير وأطلق أمامه أفاق الفكر والتأمل ، كما قرأ في القصة كتابات محمود تيمور ، المازني ، طاهر لاشين ، ثم سافر إلي باريس عام 1936م ودرس لمدة عام واحد في كلية الطب في " مونبلييه " بفرنسا ، ثم انتقل لكلية الآداب بالسربون حتى عام 1940 م ، وفي هذه الفترة تفتح أمامه عالم " جي دي موباسان " من رواد القصة القصيرة في العصر الحديث وقرأ له بلغته الأصلية ، وقرأ أيضا أعمال " إميل زولا " ، " بلزاك " ، " مارسيل بروست " ، وعند عودته من باريس بدا العمل بالصحافة بتولي الإشراف علي صفحة الأدب في جريدة المصري عام 1947 م ، ثم بجريدة " الشعب " من عام 1956 : 1959 م ، ثم كاتبا بجريدة الجمهورية ، وعمل مشرفا علي لجنة قراءة النصوص السينمائية في وزارة الثقافة ، ورئيسا لهيئة المسرح بوزارة الثقافة حتى 16-8-1976م ، وهو عضو مؤسس بنادي القصة وجمعية الأدباء واتحاد الكتاب ، كما شغل لفترة مقرر لجنة القصة بالمجلس الأعلي للثقافة .
أصدر 14 مجموعة قصصية منها: نساء من خزف1948 الماء العكر 1956 قهوة المجاذيب 1951 شهيرة وقصص أخري 1957 قديسة من باب الشعرية 1 1959 1957 مجمع الشياطين مخالب وأنياب 1953 الرقص علي العشب الأخضر 1962 الزمن الوغد 1954 القمر المشوي 1
