إن تدريس العلوم اليوم أصبح حاجة ملحة وليس في ظل التقدم التكنولوجي والمعرفي الكبير الذي يشهده القرن الحالي. فالعلوم مع الرياضيات يشكلان ثنائياً في مجال تقدم المجتمعات وتطورها ونموها واستمراريتها في التنافس.
وفي العالم العربي إهتم المدرسون بذلك فيعملوا على تطوير طرق تدريسهم للعلوم من خلال تطوير المحتوى والوسائل والأساليب التدريسية والتقييم والمعلم الذي يدرس هذه المادة.
إن تنوَع أساليب تدريس العلوم وطرائقه من الأهمية بمكان بسبب طبيعة مادة العلوم والأهداف المراد تحقيقها من تدريسها. ولقد حاول المؤلف في هذا الكتاب أن يعكس ذلك من خلال ما يقدمه من معارف ومهارات متعلقة بأساليب وطرائق التدريس التي تم التطرق إليها.
ولقد روعي في تأليف هذا الكتاب تركيزه على ثلاثة عناصر أساسية في كل طريق تدريس وهي: عمليات العلم، وتعديل الأخطاء المفاهيمية ونظرية الذكاءات المتعددة، كما أنه ركز على الجديد والسائد من اساليب وطرائق تدريس.
وقد تم تقسيم الكتاب إلى فصول: وكل فصل يتطرق إلى طرائق تدريس مرتبطة بمجال معين، ما عدا الفصلين الأول والثاني، ففي الفصل الأول تم التطرق إلى نموذج طبيعة العلم، وعمليات العلم، والفصل الثاني تطرق إلى تدريس المفاهيم والأخطاء المفاهيمية، ونظرية الذكاءات المتعددة، وطبيعة تدريس العلوم. أما باقي الفصول فكانت جلها طرائق وأساليب تدريس تعرض فيها الطريقة أو الأسلوب نظرياً وعملياً.
