إن التفوق في الشعر الياباني التقليدي لا يرتكز على مفاهيم مثل: الأفكار الأصلية، أو النبوغ والإلهام - حتى وإن كان لهذه القيم إحترام وتقدير شديدان لكن ما كان يهم بشكل أساسي وأكثر من غيره هو أن تثير القصيدة أصداء لدى الآخرين، وأن تؤثر بالكائنات الحية الأخرى، وبالموضوعات والأشياء غير الحية، وهكذا توجد بين هذه الأشياء جميعاً مطابقات إنسجامية.
إن الحواس التي تلعب، وبشدة، دوراً في خلق، او تذوق وتقييم عمل فني ياباني، ليست هي تماماً الحواس نفسها في الغرب، والواقع، إن اليابانيين آثروا دوماً حواس: اللمس، التذوق، الشمّ، أكثر من حاستي النظر والسمع اللتين يمكن ان نستخلص منهما قيماً قابلة للقياس والتحليل، أي آثروا الحواس التي ترتبط بحركات الجسم الأكثر عمقاً، وإذن، الأكثر غموضاً، واللايمكن إلتقاطها وإدراكها.
