المفارقة من البنى الأثيرة للأبداع الأدبي بصفة عامة، والشعر بصفة خاصة، ومن ثم لم يخل عصر إدبي في حياة الأمم التي كان لها نصيب من الأدب، من التعبير بالمفارقة ولو بدرجات متفاوتة في مختلف الفنون الأدبية، ذلك لأن الشعور بالمفارقة وممارستها سلوك أصيل في الانسان، وتتبدى المفارقة في مظاهر شتى تتصل بالوجود والمجتمع، فالنفس مليئة بالمتناقضات، وفيها يكمن جوهر المفارقة ومن ثم تنعكس صورها في الأدب، وتتمثل في أوجه التناقض التضاد في علاقات عناصر وأطراف يجب أن تكون متوافقة، وكذلك فيما يظهر عكس حقيقتة.
في هذا الكتاب الذي بين إيدينا، يستعرض الناقد الدكتور عبد التواب محمود عبد اللطيف، ما تمثله المفارقة من أهميه كبرى، للكشف عن مكنون جماليات النص الأدبي، وتمثل المفارقة في كل العصور الأدبية قديماً وحديثاً، والعلاقة بين المسرح والشعر، والمفارقة في المسرح الشعري على وجه الخصوص، ومدى وضوح هذا المصطلح من خلال الدراما الشعرية الحديثة.
كما يتناول مفهو المفارقة عند اللغويين وفي الاستعمال الأدبي العربي والغربي، وإشكالية ترجمة المصطلح بينهما، وبناء المفارقة واهدافها، وكذلك المقصود بالمفارقة اللفظية، وتقسيمها الى ثلاثة أقسام: مفارقة الطباق، ومفارقة المقابلة، ومفارقة المخالفة.
كما يوضح المقصود بالمفارقة البلاغية من خلال التطبيق على ثلاقة محاور رئيسية، هي: التشبية، الاستعارة، الكناية، وكذلك المفارقة الدرامية وتمثل المفارقة داخل البناء المسرحي من خلال: الشخصية الاحداث الزمان المكان الحوار.
