Car le premier objectif de l'Islam consiste a accomplir une union reussie entre la matiere et l'esprit pour etablir une nouvelle civilisation dont les piliers seraient la force et la compassion. De sorte que la force materialiste soit sous le controle d'un coeur charitable, l'incitant a faire des actions benefiques a l'avenir du genre humain.
"Dialogue avec mon ami l'athee" est donc un echange entre les deux "Moi" de Moustafa Mahmoud: Celui qui a ete apaise par la foi, et celui qui a vecu dans un monde materialiste et athee.
C'est l'aboutissement d'une longue experience personnelle du monde spirituel et du monde materialiste. Cette experience qui lui a fait percevoir, avec acuite, ce que, la foi religieuse exige comme engagement de la part du croyent: envers lui-meme, envers Dieu et envers autrui.
