في قرية ساكنة هادئة في المقاطعة، وجد فرودو باجينز الشاب الصغير نفسه مواجهاً بمهمة هائلة، حيث إن ابن عمه الكبير بيلبو عهد إليه بالخاتم ليكون تحت رعايته. ينبغي على فرودو أن يترك دياره ويخرج في رحلة خطيرة عبر الأرض الوسطى إلى "شقوق الهلاك"، وهناك يقوم بتدمير الخاتم ويهزم سيد الظلام ويحبط خططه وأغراضه الشريرة.
