"Toute recherche historique suppose une sympathie réelle pour le people ou l’époque étudiés. On ne peut comprendre une civilisation que si, malgré l’éloignement dans le temps et l’espace, on arrive à pénétrer en elle et, en quelque façon, à la vivre".
Une sympathie réelle pour un peuple ne naît qu’après lui avoir consacré une étude assez approfondie. C’est ce que j’ai essayé de faire dans mon introduction, celle-ci, assez longue par ailleurs, m’a permis de faire ressortir les particularités géographiques et humaines des villes phéniciennes et de leurs habitants et d’introduire par le fait même, mon étude proprement dite.
J’ai essayé aussi de montrer les Phéniciens sous ce qui serait peut-être leur vrai visage; car "lorsqu’on a vécu longtemps avec (eux), Presque dans leur intimate, on finit par les voir avec d’autres yeux et leur porter intérêt, ils étaient si actifs, si industrieux et même, à leur manière, si braves, si dédaigneux de la fatigue, du danger et de la mort. Pour ces qualités, on pourrait Presque dire pour ces vertus, ils méritent l’estime et la reconnaissance".
Enfin, qu’il me soit permis d’exprimer ici ma gratitude profonde à Monsieur le Professeur Gilbert Picard qui a suggéré ce travail et qui l’a aimablement dirigé, à Monsieur le Directeur Pierre Demargne qui m’a si paternellement reçu à l’Institut d’Art et d’Archéologie, à Monsieur le Directeur Jean Deshayes et à Monsieur le Professeur André Caquot don’t les conseils précieux m’ont été d’une grande aide, à Monsieur Daniel Schlumberger, à l’Émir Maurice Chehab qui m’a toujours assisté de ses conseils et fait bénéficier de sons expérience et à Monsieur le Recteur Fouad Boustany, mon premier maître, qui m’a permis de me consacrer à mon travail et qui m’a fourni des remarques judicieuses qui ont été les bienvenues. Que chacun d’eux trove ici l’expression de ma très grande reconnaissance.
