This study is an attempt to look into and throw some light upon the Line - Staff work relationship from many different points of view of scholars, academicians, practitioners and professionals in the field of management. It tries to find a pragmatic ground on which Line and Staff relationship can be evaluated or judged.
This study, because of its controversial nature, may not academically satisfy everyone in the field. Surely it would not largely go with those who consider the Staff is merely for support and advice. Nor would it go compatible with those who look at the staff as a Line manager with an authority similar to other Line managers in the organization.
Conclusively, the study does not only explore and discuss the related divergent views, but also tries to analyze the sources of such views in order to get the crux of the issue. Having done this, the need to accommodate these diversities in a cordial and harmonious work atmosphere.
The academic framework of this study will appeal both to students of management and to managers in personnel department. The scope of the study is limited to the personnel function of the organization.
