كان من المؤسف أن كثيراً ممن أنصفوا النحاس باشا بعد وفاته، فاتهم أن يذكروا خيراً للسيدة العظيمة التي كانت تقف إلى جواره وتسانده وتشاركه همومه وأحلامه، متناسين في ذلك الحكمة الشهيرة التي طاما سمعوها بأن "وراء كل رجل عظيم إمرأة"، بل إن بعضهم اعتبر تلك السيدة أسأت إلى النحاس باشا وإلى الوفد ومسيرته، رغم أن أعظم ما قدمه الوفد من انجازات وعطاء لمصر كان خلال السنوات التالية لزواج النحاس باشا بزينت الوكيل، كما أن أجمل لحظات المجد الوطني كانت في ظل تربعها على قلب الزعيم الذي كان ومازال رمزاً نادراً للنقاء والشرف والوطنية.
لقد ظلمت زينب الوكيل حية وميتة. لم تذكرها كتب التاريخ إلا متهمة، ولم تعرفها الأجيال التالية إلا مروراً كريماً لا يناسب دورها أو عطائها. لذا فإن هذا الكتاب يحاول أن يترجم سيرتها ويعيد اكتشاف تجربتها الإنسانية غير عابئاً بمسلمات من يزعمون أنهم مؤرخون أو كتاب كبار طالما ساهموا في تهميش حياة شخصية تستحق كل تقدير ومحبة ووفاء.
إن هذا الكتاب محاولة من صاحب قلم لم يحظ بشرف معايشة مصر الجميلة لأن يظهر للجيل الجديد صورة سيدة عظيمة كانت يوماً بحق سيدة مصر، لكن ظلمها الظالمون، ونسيها المؤرخون.
