أصبحت دراسة النماذج والأساليب الكمية منذ مطلع الستينيات من القرن العشرين مهمة جدا تجاه التطور التكنولوجي السريع، والتعقيدات المتزايدة في الأنظمة الحضرية والإقليمية، وهي تعتبر الآن كأدوات فعّالة نحو حل المشاكل التخطيطية، حيث يفترض أن يتوفر- ولاسيما في الوقت الحاضر- عند المخططين وصنّاع القرار وغيرهم من المهتمين بمسؤوليات الإدارة معرفة جيدة بتلك الأساليب الكمية. إن تطوير النماذج والأساليب الكمية من أجل استخدامها في التخطيط الحضري يعني أن كل من المخططين والطلاب بحاجة إلى التعرف على تقنيات النمذجه، وهناك العديد من أوصاف النماذج التي طوّرت في دراسات التخطيط تتطلب مستوى من المعرفة الجيدة في العمليات الحسابية والتي لا يملكها غالبية المخططون، وتشير الخبرة إلى أن طلبة التخطيط يجدون صعوبة كبيرة في تقبل النماذج والأساليب الكمية وقد يترتب على هذه الصعوبات ردة فعل تحول دون الإدراك الكامل لفهمها. وتقديرا للصعوبات التي تواجه العديد من المهتمين والطلاب في التعامل مع النماذج والأساليب الكمية يقدّم الكتاب وصفا لبعض تلك النماذج والأساليب الكمية المهمة وعرضها بطريقة مبسطة تساعد القارئ على استيعاب هذه التقنيات خطوة بخطوة، وعلى أية حال لا يعتبر هذا كتابا دراسيا في الرياضيات أو الإحصاء للمخططين، فقد جرى التأكيد على فهم هيكل النماذج والأساليب والتحليل الرياضي، ومع ذلك فإنه من المستحيل التعامل مع بعض النماذج والأساليب الكمية دون التواصل مع لغة وأساليب الرياضيات والإحصاء. وإني إذ أقدم هذا الكتاب آخذا بعين الاعتبار متطلبات الثقافة الجامعية وفي الوقت ذاته يكون ذا منفعة في بعض مقررات الدراسات العليا، ومن المؤمل أن يكون ذا فائدة خاصة للطلاب المتخصصين في مجالات التخطيط الحضري والإقليمي، والجغرافيا، والاقتصاد، والإدارة ... وغيرها من المواضيع ذات العلاقة. وتحقيقا للفائدة العلمية للطالب فقد زوّد الكتاب بفصل تم فيه التركيز على كيفية استخدام برنامج التحليل الإحصائي SPSS و Win QSB، وتطبيقاتها المرتبطة بمواضيع الكتاب.
