فقد كان استخدام الحاسوب قبل أربعين عاماً محصوراً بالمختصين وبالمؤسسات والشركات الكبيرة، وكان الجهاز مرتفع الثمن، كثير الأعطال ومحدود الإمكانات...، أما اليوم، فلم يعد من السهل متابعة المستجدات في مجال تقنيات الحاسوب ومجالات استخدامة، حيث لم يعد غريباً اقتناء جهاز حاسوب شخصي بذاكرة داخلية ذات سعة عالية وقرص تخزين صلب وسرعة عالية وشاشة ملونة من قبل الإنسان ذي الدخل المحدود، مع توفر أنظمة تشغيل متقدمة، ومعالجات نصوص ونماذج عمل وقاعدة بيانات وبرامج تطبيقية جاهزة لا حصر لها تمتاز بسهولة استخدامها وبإمكانات متقدمة.

يخاطب هذا الكتاب القارئ والدارس الذي يسعى إلى التعرف على استخدام الحواسيب الشخصية وعلى بعض برامجها التطبيقية المذكورة أعلاه وإلى طلاب الجامعات والكليات المتوسطة الذين يدرسون مساقات أولية في تطبيقات الحاسوب واستخداماته المختلفة.
