لقد سعى الفكر الإنساني من خلال الفلسفة الكشف عن ماهية الوجود، وتفسير العناصر المشتركة بين الآلهة والبشر والحيوانات والنباتات، والتساؤل عن بداية الكون والاستفسار عن نهايته، بعيدًا عن المنظور الديني الضيق (الذي يقدم أجوبة مسبقًا). لتُعرِّف الفلسفة نفسها على أنها دهشة الإنسان المستمرة، وسعيه الفضولي الدائم البحث عن المعرفة، واكتشاف الطبيعة والذات. لكن مع استيلاء الدين على العناصر السحرية بالتقاليد البدائية، أكسبته تلك العناصر قوة لإخضاع الفلسفة - أو جانبًا منها متمثلًا في التحليل والاستنتاج والإقناع - بذلك جرّ التفلسف لخدمة الدين الذي تفرضه القوة السياسية (كما في أنشطة القرون الوسطى). زيادة على توسيع مفاهيمه لتشمل أسئلة البشر الملحة، التي بدأت تظهر مع سعي البعض لتحرير الدين من قبضة الأسطورة المقيّدة له.
