تنشأ العقدة إثر التعرض لصدمة أو مشكلة نفسية، أو إثر التعرض للضغط النفسي أي تتابع الصدمات والمشاكل؛ ونظرا لأن مثل هذه الضغوط تُضعِفُ الأنا في مواجهة بعض المواقف خاصةً التي تعرّض الشخص على إثرها للصدمة ـ فبسبب الصدمة، يخلق له وعيه ـ لحماية الأنا ـ سلوكاً معيناً تجاه بعض الأمور التي سبق أن آذته، إما بتجنبها أو التحايل عليها أو قلبها هنا يمكن أن نقول أن العقدة هي السعي لإخفاء ما يؤلم الإنسان أو تغطية الشيء الذي قد يُظهره بمظهر لا يرغبه.
