يتناول واحدة من الظواهر اللغوية التي لا تكاد تخلو منها لغة من اللغات الإنسانية، وهي ظاهرة المحظور استعماله من الألفاظ والعبارات المستهجنة، والمباح استعماله بديلا من المحظور من الألفاظ والعبارات المستحسنة، وقد لوحظ في صحيح البخاري استخدام الرسول - وهو من هو في الحياء وحسن الخلق - الفعل الدال على العلاقة الجنسية المشتق من مادة النون والياء والكاف استخداماً صريحاَ، وكذلك استخدامه الرسول الفظ الصريح الدال على الحدث، المشتق من مادة الضاد والراء والطاء ، وقد أثار هذا عدداً من الأسئلة: ما هي المعايير التي تعد اللفظ على أساسها محظور؟ وهل يمكن أن يكون اللفظ الواحد محظوراً على اعتبار وغير محظور على اعتبار آخر؟ وهل تتفاوت المحظور الواقعة على شيء واحد في درجة الحظر؟ وهل تتفاوت الألفاظ البديلة أو المستحسنة فيما بينها؟ وقد جاء هذا الكتاب ليجيب عن هذه الأسئلة كلها، فضلاً عن معالجة ظاهرة المحظور لاول مرة من جهة نظر دينية، من خلال دراسة المحظورات الواردة في صحيح البخاري.
