شهد القرنان الثامن والتاسع الهجريان حركات فكرية وثقافية واسعة وذلك في إسهام العلماء في التصنيف وتصدر حلقات التدريس ولقاء العلماء في المحافل، ومن أولئك العلماء أحمد بن علي بن حجر العسقلاني المتوفى سنة اثنتين وخمسين وثمانمائة، إذ كان من العلماء المكثرين في التصنيف إذ ناهزت مصنفاته الخمسين والمائة مصنف موزعة على القراءات والتفسير والحديث والفقه واللغة والفتوى والقضاء والسير والرواية والشعر وما إلى ذلك.
ولعل كتابه "فتح الباري بشرح صحيح البخاري" من أهم مصنفاته في علم الحديث إذ تضمن الأحاديث الواردة في صحيح البخاري وكذلك أحاديث أخرى احتج بها في تحقيق المسائل اللغوية والنحوية وفيه الكثير من الدراسات في القراءات والتفسير والفقه والتراجم والرواية، ويعد مصدراً مهماً من مصادر الدراسات اللغوية لما احتوى عليه من مباحث في القراءات والتفسير وعلم الدلالة.
وقد أغفله الباحثون واللغويون مع أهميته، لذا درس المؤلف الجهد، اللغوي في الكتاب ليقدم إلى المكتبة العربية علم هذا العالم الجليل في هذا المجال، وقد اقتضت طبيعة البحث أن يكون على أربعة فصول يسبقها تمهيد عن حياته وكتابه وتلحقها خاتمة بأبرز نتائج البحث.
أما الفصل الأول فقد خصص لدراسة مصادره اللغوية وتضمنت خمس مجموعات هي كتب القراءات وكتب التفسير وكتب الحديث، وكتبِ الفقه، وكتب اللغة، وأمّا الفصل الثاني فقد درس فيه المؤلف منهجه في البحث اللغوي، وتناول الفصل الثالث الدراسات الصوتية والصرفية، أما الفصل الرابع والأخير فقد خصص لدراسة مباحث الدلالة.
