إن من طبيعة العربية النموّ والإتساع، فقد نمت واتسعت إتساعاً لم تشهد لغة أخرى حتى صار الإتساع اللغوي ظاهرة تستلفت نظر العلماء من لغويين وبلاغيين ونحويين وفقهاء.
فقد ورد الإتساع في كتب اللغة في باب الحذف والزيادة والتقديم والتأخير والحمل على المعنى والتشبيه والتوكيد، وفي باب المجاز إذا لحق بالحقيقة، وفي كتب البلاغة في المجاز (التشبيه والإستعارة والكناية والمجاز المرسل)، وفي كتب النحو في باب الحذف والتضمين.
وعليه، تناول الدكتور "عطية الغول" الحوار المسرحي نحوياً وأسلوبياً في بعض مسرحيات توفيق الحكيم (كالأيدي الناعمة والصفقة والورطة)، وتعد هذه الدراسة أرضاً بكراً لم تطأها أقلام الباحثين، ولم يتفطنوا لها، حيث اعتمد المؤلف على كتب النحو القديمة للتأصيل لهذه الدراسة، والإطلاع على المؤلفات الحديثة باللغتين العربية والإنجليزية والمترجمة للإضاءة عليها، والإستهداء بها، والإفادة من أنظارها في دراسة هذه المسرحيات من حيث: طول الجملة، والتقديم والتأخير، والحذف، والإنشاء والخبر والتعريف والتنكير، وملاحظة دلالات الكلمات في سياقاتها الموقفية.
أما المنهج الذي سار وفقه، فقد جمع بين المنهج التاريخي والوصفي التحليلي، ووزع الدراسة في تمهيد وأربعة فصول، ودون في الخاتمة خلاصة ما توصل إليه، والتوصيات التي انبثقت من هذه الدراسة.
