يتضمن الكتاب دراسات نشرت في أزمنة مختلفة لكنها تصب في محور واحد متكامل، وتناولت تاريخ نشوء المسيحية المشرقية وركزت على المسيحيين في لبنان من خلال واقعهم وصراعاتهم ونماذج من الطروحات المتباينة حول الهوية بين قيادات ورموز دينية وسياسية عبرت عن الهوية بأشكالها المتناقضة من الإنعزالية إلى العروبة إلى المشرقية (البطريرك بشاره الراعي، الأب بواكيم مبارك، سمير جعجع، يوسف بك كرم).
هذا الكتاب هو دعوة للحوار من أجل بلورة مفهوم مشترك جامع لهويات الجماعات والفئات التي تحيا في بيئة جغرافية واحدة إنطلاقاً من أن لا خلاص لها إلا ضمن إطار بناء دولة وطنية مدنية تحقق العدالة والمساواة لجميع مكوناتها.
