مرت تركيا بأربعة مراحل مفصلية أدت إلى تغييرات كبيرة في تاريخ البلاد، تمثلت المرحلة الأولى بإنقلاب الإتحاديين على السلطان عبد الحميد الذي حاول تحقيق مشروع الجامعة الإسلامية من أجل لم شمل الأقليات والقوميات بعد أن طغت الإستقلالية على أبناء السلطنة.
أقحم الإتحاديون الدولة العثمانية في الحرب العالمية الأولى 1914 إلى جانب ألمانيا، ونتيجة للإندحارات التي تعرضت لها دول المحور في نهاية الحرب، اضطرت الدولة العثمانية إلى الإستسلام للحلفاء بعد فقدان معظم الأراضي التي كانت تسيطر عليها.
شكلت هذه المرحلة بداية الصراع بين الطورانية والإسلام وطرحت مسألة الهوية والتغريب.
المرحلة الثانية تمثلت ببناء تركيا جديدة على يد مصطفى كمال باشا أتاتورك 1923 مستعيراً نموذج الحضارة الغربية حيث تم إلغاء السلطنة وحصرت مهمة الخلافة بالشؤون الدينية فقط، كذلك تم تطبيق مشروع علمنة الدولة التركية، تخلّلتها سلسلة من القوانين والتشريعات استهدفت المؤسسات الدينية في كل من الدولة والمجتمع.
