وهران الملقبة بالباهية مدينة جزائرية تقع على الساحل الغربي للبلاد على البحر المتوسط، عاصمة غرب البلاد وثاني أكبر مدينة بعد الجزائر العاصمة، تعد المدينة مركزاً اقتصادياً وميناء بحرياً هاماً، وهي ثانية مدن الجزائر ورابعة مدن المغرب العربي الكبير من حيث عدد السكان (أكثر من 800 ألف نسمة وأكثر من 1.5 مليون نسمة مع ضواحيها) وتكاد تعادل نصف مدينة الجزائر حجماً، يحدها من الشمال خليج مفتوحة ومن الغرب جبل مرجانو (420 متر) وهضبة مولاي عبد الاقدر الكيلاني يقع تجمع المدينة على ضفتي كور وادي الرحي (جمع رحى) المسمى الآن وادي رأس العين، والمدينة بربرية الأصل، وكانت تسمى إيفري، ثم استوطنها وعمرها الأندلسيون العائدون في القرن العاشر الميلادي، وصارت ميناء تجارياً وحربياً مهماً في عهد بني زيان، ولكنها سقطت بعد ذلك بيد الاحتلال الإسباني مدة ثلاثة قرون كاملة، ثم أدت دوراً مهماً كخط أمامي في الاحتلال الفرنسي لمراكش، واحتلها الفرنسيون عام 1831.
بعد استقلال الجزائر شهدت المدينة تطورات مهمة جعلت منها ثاني مدن البلد وقطباً اقتصادياً وعلمياً مهماً، تنوع النشاط الاقتصادي فيها من صناعات كبيرة وصغيرة استفاد من مجاورتها لمدينة أرزيو النفطية، كما أصبحت المدينة قطباً تجارياً بفضل مينائها البحري النشط الذي شكل المنفذ الأساسي للتجارة الخارجية لكل الناحية الغربية للجزائر، ووهران اليوم من أهم مراكز الصناعة الحديثة والتجارة الخارجية في الجزائر بل إنها تنافس مدينة الجزائر بشدة، وتسيطر على معظم تجارة غربي الجزائر، وهي نهاية خط حديد كلومب ببشار، أطول خط يتغلغل في الصحراء وتعد وهران أيضاً الميناء الحربي الأول في الجزائر، وذلك بقاعدته المرسى الكبير التي تشبث الاستعمار الفرنسي بالبقاء فيها 15 سنة بعد الاستقلال.
