عمان، ذات التاريخ العريق الموغل في القدم، المدينة التي شهدت في عصرنا هذا، تقدماً وإزدهاراً وإتساعاً، لم تعرفه من قبل، هي موضوع هذا الكتاب، الذي يقدمه المؤلف للقراء، إحتفاءً بإعلانها عاصمةً للثقافة العربية.
نشأت عمان أصلاً في موقع فريد ذي خصوصية متميزة، كان هناك نبع ماء غزير وفير، دائم الجريان في مجرى السيل الذي زادته إتساعاً مياه الأمطار، وكان يمتد بين أشجار الدفلي والحور والصفصاف، بإتجاه الشرق، ليخترق الرصيفّة، ثم يمر إلى جانب الزرقاء مع الوادي العميق الذي شكل فاصلاً طبيعياً بين مملكة عمون القديمة ومناطق عمان القديمة ومناطق الشمال.
من هنا أطلق عليها الأقدمون اسم "مدينة المياه"، وإلى جانب الوادي الحافل بالأشجار الباسقة، يرتفع الجبل الذي يشرف عليه ويسيطر على حوافيه، والذي جعل منه سكان عمون القدماء قلعة دفاعية حصينة، يصدّون منه هجمات أعدائهم، ومن هنا أطلق عليه اسم "جبل القلعة".
في عهد الرومان والبيزنطيين، ازدهرت عمان وبلغت شأناً عظيماً من الإتساع والثراء والفخامة، تشهد على ذلك الآثار والمعالم الرائعة التي كانت المدينة تحفل بها، إبتداءً من جبل القلعة، ومروراً بالمدرّج وسبيل الحوريات وصفوف الأعمدة ذات التيجان الكورنثية الرائعة، من هنا أعطوها اسم "فيلادلفيا مدينة الحب الأخوي"، وأصبحت درّةً بين مدن الديكابوليس الشهيرة.
يسعى الكاتب والمؤرخ الأردني "سليمان موسى"، في تأليف هذا الكتاب إلى إثراء القارئ بالمعلومات الوثيقة، ليكون مرجعاً لهذه المدينة العظيمة ومنارة علم ومعرفة لأهلها الطيبين الأكارم؛ وقد جاء هذا الكتاب في ثلاثة فصول تناولت المواضيع التالية: تاريخ عمان القديم والحديث، آثار عمان، المؤسسات الثقافية، أمانة عمان، مناطق عمان الكبرى وغيرها...
