يروي نهضة يافا في العصر الحديث حين أخذت الحياة بالعودة إليها بالتدريج مع القرار العثماني في أواخر القرن السابع عشر بإعادة إعمار مدن الموانئ وضمنها يافا.
وبسبب موقع يافا الإستراتيجي وأهمية مينائها تعرضت المدينة لضربات قاسية، وعاث فيها الإحتلال الفرنسي بقيادة نابليون دماراً وخراباً وقتلاً.
ومع بداية القرن التاسع عشر بدأ محمد باشا أبو المرق مسيرة البناء، واستمر فيها وبإندفاعة كبيرة حاكمها الشهير محمد باشا أبو نوبت الذي أهداها قبلة الحياة.
واستمرت مسيرة التطور حتى تموضعت المدينة على الخريطة الفلسطينية كأهم حواضرها الإقتضادية والثقافيقة والإجتماعية إلى أن داهمتها النكبة ودمرتها السلطة الإسرائيلية بعد أن هجّرت أهلها ومحت معظم معالمها.
يتتبع الكتاب مراحل تطور يافا حتى سنة 1840 وكيفية تشكّل أنماطها الإجتماعية ومقوماتها الإقتصادية، وإضافة إلى مينائها الذي شكّل مدخلاً لوسط فلسطين وجنوبها، فقد حبتها الطبيعة بأرض خصبة ووفرة بالمياه، وتوجهت الإستثمارات نحو زراعة البيارات التي غطت مساحات واسعة من محيط المدينة في الإتجاهات كافة، حتى أصبح برتقال يافا وبياراتها علامة فارقة للمدينة، وأهم مصادر ثروتها، وأكبر محرّك لإقتصادها.
يروي الكتاب هذه الأحداث معتمداً على سجلات محكمة يافا الشرعية، أكثر المصادر المحلية غنىً بالمواد الإجتماعية.
