فن الحكي وثيق الصلة بالمحاكاة والفعل (المحتوى) وبالحبكة mythos (صيغة تمثيلية غير مشفرة في علامات)، إنه هو المشترك والعام، أما "السرد" narration فيرتبط بطريقة التعبير اللفظية عن المحتوى.
إن السرد اللفظي هو أحد الصيغ العديدة الممكنة للتعبير عن المحتوى (أو الفعل)، ونعثر عليه في الملحمة، والقصة القصيرة، والرواية، والتقرير الصحفي، والسيرة الشعبية، والسيرة الذاتية، إلخ.
بينما تتجلى فنون أخرى مثل السينما والمسرح والبانتومايم، عبر وسائط سيميوطيقيةٍ تنتمي إلى أنظمة أخرى للعلامات: الصورة، الحركة، الإيماء، الإيقاع، إلخ.
يرتبط "السرد" بمستوى التعبير وله إرتباطات من ناحية جذوره بالنظم أو طريقة التنظيم والنسج، ولذا هو الأقرب إلى طريقة التقديم أو التعبير، إنه يرتبط بالحياكة والصنع والتشكيل، وتحويل المادة الأولية السابقة عليه (خيوط الغزل) إلى شكل من أشكال النسيج.
وبناء عليه سوف نتحدث في هذا الكتاب عبر أقسامه الخمسة عن فنون حكائية سردية مثل الرواية، أو القصة القصيرة والسيرة الذاتية، إلخ وفنون حكائية درامية مثل المسرح، وفنون حكائية صورية مثل السينما، إلخ.
التقسيم الذي اعتمده كل من سوزانا أونيجا وجوزيه أنجيل جارسيا لاندا في تنظيمهما لمادة الكتاب، إذ يخصص القسم الأول لمستوى الفابولا (أو المتن الحكائي) والقسم الثاني لمستوى "القصة" أو التمثيل الذهني لمجموعة الأحداث والأعمال التي يضمها المستوى الأول، ومستوى النص، وهو المستوى الذي يتجسد فيه المستوى الأول والثاني كنصٍ مقروء، إنه المستوى الذي يتجلى فيه نشاط الراوي الخطابي الذي يبرز من خلال عملية التقديم، الذي يستدعى بالضرورة عنصر المروى له الذي يشارك في عملية إنتاج النص، أو الذي يتحقق على يديه النص، من خلال نشاط القراءة.
