إن الحروب الصليبية المخاضة تحت شعار تخليص بيت المقدس من أيدي المسلمين، لم تلبث أن أظهرت أهداف الصليبيين ونواياهم، التي كانت ترمي من ورائها، إلى تحقيق مطامعهم بإقامة دويلات، يتمكنون من خلالها من السيطرة على مقدرات الشرق وخيراته.
وبما أن الصليبيين جاءوا إلى الشرق لأهداف معينة، توسلوا لها الحرب سبيلاً لتحقيقها، كان طبيعياً أن تكون منشأتهم الحربية، وهي موضوع هذا الكتاب عديدة ومتنوعة، تمثلت بكثرة بناء القلاع والحصون والأبراج، وقد كان نصيب المدن والمناطق والقرى اللبنانية، من هذه المنشآت الحربية كثير، ولا يزال العديد منها في مختلف المناطق، شاهداً على وجودهم السابق، وقد ذكرها المؤرخون والرحالة من عرب وفرنجة، وكانت هذه القلاع نوعين: ساحلية وداخلية.
القلاع الساحلية مثل: شمع – صيدا – جبيل – آنفه – المسيلحة – طرابلس. وداخلية مثل: تبنين – دوبية – شقيف أرنون – حاصبيا – سمار جبيل – وعكار.
إن أهمية هذا الكتاب تنبع من خلال تسليط الضوء على هذه القلاع الأثرية، لنعيد إليها مجدها، ونكشف عن طبيعتها وأهميتها، وما تبقى منها، وما تحتاج إليه لتستعيد رونقها، ووضع بعض الإقتراحات التي تساهم في تفعيلها وتوظيفها سياحياً، لكي تأخذ الدور المرتجى منها، في جعلها مراكز استقطاب سياحي، تساهم في تنمية المناطق التي تتواجد فيها هذه القلاع، على مختلف الصُعُد. فنحفظ بذلك إرثنا الوطني، الذي يعتبر أمانة في أعناقنا للأجيال القادمة، ونساهم في وضع إستراتيجية تؤسس وتخطط لمستقبل سياحي واعد، آخذة بالإعتبار تلك المقومات المعمارية التراثية.
