لم نعهد في أي مراحل التاريخ المختلفة أن نشهد موجات العنف أثناء حدوثها مثلما يحدث الآن. فنشرات الأخبار تعرض ما يحدث في العالم في أول 45 ثانية من النشرة، كما أن رؤية الأحداث الحية في التلفاز تجعلنا نشعر وكأننا في قلب الأحداث. فعندما أرى الأطفال اللاجئين وهم في حالة شرود أو كلما شاهدت لقطات من الوحشية التي تحدث لهم، أشعر وكأن يد خفية أدارت ساعة الزمن داخلي لتعيدني إلى مذبحة الحرب العالمية الثانية. فلم تكن المعاناة واقعة على مجرد جماهير من الناس بل على كل فرد من ملايين من الأفراد المرتعبين. ترى، من سيمسك بيد طفل يرتعش بسبب الكوابيس التي راودته بعد مذبحة رواندا؟ كم عدد المعالجون النفسيون الذين يجب إرسالهم إلى يوغوسلافيا السابقة؟ أين يذهب المنسحقون تحت أنظمة الحكم الدكتاتوري؟ من يبث الشجاعة في قلب طفل في الضواحي الفقيرة بمدن الغرب حيث الأسلحة في المدارس الابتدائية؟
لكن يفوق هذا العنف الظاهر عنف من نوع أخر يتعرض له أطفال يساء إليهم بدنياً وعاطفياً وفكرياً من قبل أفراد عائلتهم أو القائمين على رعايتهم. وفي أحلك أوقاته يتطور إلى أسوأ أنواع العنف على الإطلاق: إساءات جنسية في مرحلة تكوين الشخصية أو في سني حياته الأولى.
وأثناء تدريب الناجين من الإساءة على مساعدة أنفسهم رأيت كيف أن هذه الحياة المنسكبة تمكنهم أن يختاروا مصيراً جديداً. لذا يعتبر الكتاب محاولة لشرح الدور الذي يمكن أن يلعبه الرعاة المتطوعون في حياة الذين عانوا من إساءات جنسية في الطفولة أو أي نوع من الصدمات التي تتسبب في إضعاف نفوسهم.
