يبحث هذا الكتاب في تاريخ الآثوريين وأوضاعهم الإجتماعية والسياسية خلال أحداث الحرب العالمية الأولى وما بعدها.
كان الآثوريون قبل الحرب العالمية الأولى يعيشون أساساً في الدولة العثمانية وإيران حيث كانوا يحتلون في إيران السهول الواقعة حول بحيرة أورمية، أما في الدولة العثمانية فكانوا يتركزون في ولايات الموصل وحكاري وأرضروم ووان.
وبدأت مأساة الآثوريين في رحلتهم الطويلة في أورمية إلى همدان حيث القوات الإنكليزية المرابطة هناك ومنها إلى العراق. لقد ساروا تحت الشمس المحرقة بصحبة عوائلهم ومتاعهم وتعرضوا في الطريق لغارات متواصلة من جانب الأتراك والأكراد وسكان آذربيجان إيران وانتشرت بينهم أمراض التيفوئيد والجدري والدزانتري والكوليرا والملاريا ... لقد عانوا من قلة الطعام والماء حتى أنهم كانوا يجدون صباحاً في المكان الذي يقضون الليل فيه، العشرات بل المئات من الجثث وتشير الإحصائيات إلى أن عدد من مات من الآثوريين أثناء هذا الإنسحاب بلغ (17) ألف نسمة إضافة إلى (10) آلاف انقطعوا عن الركب بسبب القبائل التي كانت تمارس السلب فانقطعت أخبارهم وأخيراً وصلوا إلى همدان ... وهناك التقوا بالقوات الإنكليزية، غير أن المدينة كانت تعاني من الجوع وكثير من سكانها كان يتهددهم الموت المحتوم.
هذا مشهد من عديد من المشاهد التي يؤرخها التاريخ، لكن ماذا جرى فعلاً ولماذا جرى، هذا هو موضوع كتاب "مأساة الآثوريين" ، والأهم من ذلك أن هذه المأساة لم تزل بدون حل كغيرها من مآسي الأثنيات في معظم بلدان العالم، وخاصة في العراق، ولأن مؤلف الكتاب LT.col.R.S.Staffond عمل كمفتش إداري في العراق، لمدة ست سنوات متواصلة وكان له اتصال قريب من موقف الآثوريين في صيف العام (1933)، وكيف طمست المسألة الآثورية، منذ ذلك الحين، وتم نسيانها ...
