للقدس عند المسلمين عامة، وأهل فلسطين وبلاد الشام خاصة، أهمية سامية عبّروا عنها عبر المصور من خلال وسائل شتّى، منها الحج والنذر والإعتكاف والغيرة عليها والصحوة لحمايتها، فأصبحت المدينة في فكرهم وعاداتهم بعضاً من الخيال، وبعضاً من الواقع.
يعرض هذا الكتاب الركائز الدينية والتاريخية التي أسست عليها أهمية القدس عند المسلمين، ببعدَيها التوراتي - المسيحي والإسلامي، والنقاش بشأنها من قبل العلماء المسلمين.
ويشمل أيضاً تحليلاً وإعادة تجميع لكتاب "فضائل بيت المقدس" للوليد بن حمّاد الرملي، المتوفى نحو سنة 300 للهجرة (912 للميلاد).
أهمية هذا الكتاب أنه أول ما ألف في موضوع فضائل القدس، وبذلك يعطينا صورة جلية لما كان المسلمون يعتقدونه عن أهمية المدينة، بالنسبة إليهم منذ فترة متقدمة في التاريخ الإسلامي، ويصحح كثيراً من الأفكار المغلوط فيها التي يرددها المؤرخون المعاصرون.
ولكتاب الرملي ميزة أخرى هي أنه الأساس لجميع الكتاب التي دُونت بعده في موضوع فضائل القدس.
