هذا الكتاب قصة تاريخية فرنسية - عربية تروي البداية العاصفة للعلاقات المباشرة بين فرنسا ومصر في نهاية القرن الثاني عشر والثالث عشر حين شعر الفرنجة بأهمية مصر إبان الحروب الصليبية, وبعد فشل الملوك فيليب أغسطس وريتشارد قلب الأسد وفردريك بربروسا الأول في القيام بالحملة الصليبية الثالثة؛ حيث لم تستطع الأستيلاء علي القدس وتحريرها من قبضة صلاح الدين الأيوبي.
وبدأ من الواضح أن صلاح الدين لم يسحب قواته من القدس التي كانت بمثابة قلب إمبراطوريته في مصر؛ فشعر الصليبيون أنه من أجل إعادة الأستيلاء علي فلسطين التي كانت المملكة اللاتينية للقدس, لابد من ضرب قوة الأيوبيين في قلبها أي في مصر ذاتها, وعلي ذلك فإن مفاتيح أورشليم القدس كانت دوماً في القاهرة.
ويهدف هذا الكتاب إلي محاولة توضيح كيف أن المصريين خاصة والعرب في منطقة الشرق الأوسط عامة أدركوا المعني الحقيقي لتوجه جموع من الفرنجة نحوهم متخذة من الصليب شعاراً. وإذا كانت قوة جوانفيل وج. ساراسين اللذين رافقاً لويس التاسع إلي مصر ساعدت في تعزيز وشرح وجهة نظر الفرنجة, فإنه في الوقت نفسه لم يكن لدي المؤرخين العرب الحساسية نفسها تجاه قصص الورع التي أحاطت "بملك ملوك فرنسا" كما يسمونه, والذي أصبح فيما بعد يعرف في فرنسا بالقديس لويس.
