البحث عن بر الأمان للذات الإنسانية هي الفكرة التي تدور حولها رواية "أفق هادئ" ثم تأتي بعدها عناصر الطبيعة لتمثل أقنعة الكاتب المبدع عبد الله جبار السعدون للولوج إلى عالم الإنسان الباطني، ونظرته إلى معنى الحياة وجوهرها. من شخصيات هذه الرواية من وجد نفسه في البحر، ومنهم من وجد نفسه في الكتابة، ومنهم من وجد نفسه في العمل، ومنهم من آثر الرحيل طوعاً إلى العالم الآخر.
يبدأ المشهد الأول من النص بوصفٍ تصويري سردي لحال حارس المنارة العجوز "هادي"، وقد تهادت إلى روحه أنسام البحر؛ "هادي" الذي لا ينفك عن التجذيف كل يوم وهو يمخر بقاربه المثقوب عباب المحيط بكل عزيمة ثابتة وإرادة صلبة آملاً الوصول إلى برّ الأمان والذي سوف يلتقي قبل وصوله عدد من الرجال التائهون والمبحرون مثله، فكل واحد منهم يسبح في ضوء حلمه، غالبيتهم من رواد البحر يسكنونه يصغون فقط إلى صوته تتقاذفهم أمواجه ومسرورون بعبورهم إليه. ومنهم "رحيب" الذي أعطاه التفاحة ثم رمى عليه دفتراً من الجلد ورحل، مخلفاً في نفسه التساؤلات، ومنهم "الرجل الغريب"، الكاتب "سلامة" الذي يبحث عن فكرة لروايته ويجد في الرحلات البحرية الإلهام المطلوب للكتابة، ومنهم الفتى "جهبذ" بائع الجرائد الذي قرر والداه الإبحار وتركاه وحيداً لسنة كاملة وبعد طول انتظار عرف أنهما لن يعودا. ووسط هذا كله لا يزال "هادي" حارس المنارة ينتظر الواصلين مكرساً حياته للمنارة وهادياً للناس التائهين منهم.
