من الناس من تمضى به الحياة وانية غير حفية فإذا مضى عرفة الناس قدره ولهجوا بذكره، ومن الناس من يعظم فى الحياة جاهه ويشيع ذكره فإذا مضى غفل عنه التاريخ ونسبه الناس، ومن الناس من يذكر بالفضل وينبه بالمثل الصالح ويؤثر بالحمد وإن لم يحظ بجاه الحياة وسلطان الحكم فإذا مضى عرفه فضله وخلد ذكره، وكان رفاعه رابع الطهطاوى من هذا القبيل، عرفه الناس معلماً وكاتباً وشاعراً وناثراً وصحفياً وأدبياً ومؤرخاً يصول فى كل ميدان من ميداين الفكر، وإن لم يعرفوا فيه صاحب جاه أو سلطان، فعلى كثرة ما تقلب فى من مناصب الدولة لم يل منصبا فيه جاه أو سلطان ولم يظفر بما ظفر به دونه من ألقاب الجاه والسلطان، ولم ينل من الألقاب إلا لقب البكوية القرين برتبة الأميرالاى الذى ارتقى إليها بحكم تدرجه فى وظائف الحكومة.
وحين مضى الطهطاوى بعد حياة غنية خصبة بالفكر والإنتاج وطالع الناس مظاهر التقدم التى دعا إليها من قبل، عرفوا ما كان له من فضل بعثها والتنبيه إليها فأقبلوا يستجلون آثاره ويشسدون بذكره. وغدت سيرته خير ملهم للشبية فى مصر، بما حوت من آيات الجد والمثابرة والعزم والاصرار، فقد بنى الطهطاوى حياته بيديه، ذهب إلى باريس إماماً وفقيها للأفندية المبعوثين، فتحول دراساً يتعلم ويبحث ويستجلى ويتأمل.ويعنينا من سيرة الطهطاوى هنا فى هذا الكتاب ما كان من تأثيره على حياته كإنسان وإن كان لا يصور لنا تفرده وخلوده مما يقترن دائماً "بالأثر التاريخى" الذى يتركه صاحب السيرة على صفحة الحياة، ويجذب التاريخ إليه على الدوام.
فكلما امتد هذا الأثر التاريخى على صفحة الحياة كلما امتدت سيرة صاحبة على الزمن، ولا نجد أثراً للإنسان امتد على صفحة الحياة فى مصر الحديثة كما امتد أثر الطهطاوى، وسيبقى هذا الأثر خالداً ما بقيت نهضة مصر قائمة تفرع وتأخذ سبيلها نحو الارتقاء والنهوض والتقدم.
