تعرّض العالم الإسلامي لغزوات همجية من قبل المغول في القرن السابع الهجري عصفت بالبلاد وزرعت الرعب في قلوب العباد فسقطت بغداد في أيديهم، وكان سقوطها كارثة عظيمة ألمّت بالمسلمين وزلزلت كيانهم وأضعفت ثقتهم في أنفسهم، لولا أن تدارك السلطان سيف الدين قطز هذا الموقف بإنتصاره الخالد على المغول في عين جالوت فردّ الروح وأعاد الثقة وأوقف زحفهم الكاسح وردّه ودفع خطره.
وبعد مرور قرن ونصف القرن تقريباً من هذا الإكتساح الهمجي المدمّر الذي حمله هولاكو على الشرق عاد الإعصار مرة ثانية على يد تيمور الأعرج "تيمورلنك".
وقد صوّرت المصادر العربية والفارسية شخصية تيمورلنك على نحو مخيف، فهو شديد القسوة، جامد القلب، يميل إلى سفك الدماء وسبي النساء، وهو فعلاً كما صوّرته، لكنّها أخفت جانباً مشرقاً يتمثل في أنه كان رجلاً واسع المعرفة، يتحدّث بلغات عديدة، يحب الفلاسفة والعلماء والفلكيين والأطباء، جمع المهرة من كل أنحاء الأرض في عاصمته سمرقند، فشيّد حضارة عظيمة في بلاده، وأقام المنشآت الشامخة وتعدّ المقبرة التي أمر ببنائها لنفسه آية من آيات فن العمارة ومثالاً لسمات العصر التيموري.
تيمورلنك "سيد العالم" في سيرته ومسيرته يُعتبر عند الشعوب التركستانية وعند الأوزبك بطلاً قوميّاً ورمزاً للشجاعة والعدل.
