حين قدم تيمورلنك باتجاه العراق والشام والدولة العثمانية، دمر جيوش السلطنة المملوكية، وحول بلاد الشام إلى جثة شبه هامدة، وهزم السلطان العثماني بيازيد الأول في معركة أنقرة. كان السلطان بيازيد، قبل معركة أنقرة، معسكراً أمام أبواب القسطنطينية، فأجل تيمور فتحها نحو نصف قرن. وفي دمشق اهتم تيمور بابن خلدون، وطلب منه تأليف كتاب عن الغرب الإسلامي، ففعل؛ ثم استقبل سفارة جاءته من إسبانيا الصليبية، رداً على سفارة ماضية.
كانت إسبانيا الصليبية تحضر للاستيلاء على غرناطة، وإزالة العروبة والإسلام من الأندلس. فهل يا ترى كان تيمور يعمل بالتنسيق مع الإسبان، في سبيل عزل الشمال الأفريقي عن الأندلس، بعد تدميره للقوى الإسلامية العظمى -المماليك والعثمانيين- التي كان باستطاعتها نجدة الأندلس؟ في عصرنا، الذي تروج فيه الأحاديث بكثرة عن المؤامرات، قد يجد القارئ الكثير الكثير في رحلة كلافيجو، التي تمت ترجمتها للمرة الأولى، ونشرها بالعربية بشكل علمي لائق.
