ورغم أنّنا نحتاط ونحترس كثيراً للحؤول دون إصابتنا بالأمراض، إلّا أن الجراثيم تنجح في التّغلّب علينا في كثير من الأحيان؛ وتنقلب حياتنا رأساً على عقب. فالمرض يشلّ حركتنا، ويمنعنا من التصرّف بحرّية، ويحدّ من نشاطاتنا.
في قصة «أبطال حمّى البحر الأبيض المتوسّط: FMF» للكاتبة الأميركية ميغان براينت سنتعرف نحنّ والأطفال إلى "ألين" وهي فتاة صغيرة تعاني من مرض وراثي نادر يسمّى حمّى البحر الأبيض المتوسّط، واختصاره "أف أم إف". وسنشارك "ألين" ورفاقها المصابين بهذا المرض آلامهم وأحزانهم، وسنتعرّف إلى مرضهم، كما سنستمدّ من شجاعتهم في مجابهة هذا المرض الذي يظهر بأشكال متعددة ويسبّب آلاماً شديدة القوةَ لمواجهة الأمراض البسيطة التي يمكن أن تصيبنا. فآلامنا رغم قسوتها لا تقاس بشيء مقارنة مع آلام أولئك الصغار الذين يستحقّون بجدارة أن يُطلَق عليهم "أبطال أف أم أف الشجعان".
يتناول هذا الكتاب بأسلوب قصصي الأمراض الالتهابية الذاتية النادرة، وهي مجموعة جديدة نسبياً من الأمراض. تعدّ حمّى البحر الأبيض المتوسط (FMF) ثاني أكثر الأمراض الالتهابية الذاتية انتشاراً بعد ارتفاع الحرارة المتكرّر مع تقرّح البلعوم والتهاب العقد اللمفاوية (PFAPA) وتسبّب التهاباً في الأعضاء الداخلية، وبالتالي ألماً شديداً.
ولأن الأطفال لا يعرفون كيف يتعاملون مع الأمراض. لذلك، كان الهدف من هذه القصص القصيرة والبسيطة تخليص الأطفال من خوفهم، ومساعدتهم على فهم مرض "حمّى البحر الأبيض المتوسط". وما يمرّون به من أعراض من خلال "ألين" الطفلة الصغيرة التي تحارب هذا المرض بشجاعة. لذلك تُصور قصص «أبطال حمّى البحر الأبيض المتوسّط: FMF» مواقف من الحياة اليومية للشخصيّة الرئيسة "ألين" وأصدقائها في أجواء يسودها المرّح والتفائل والأمل بالشفاء.
