رغم أن المؤلف له باع طويل في شتى المعارف والعلوم، إلا أنه وجد كما لها وشرفها لا يتحقق إلا في علم البلاغة؛ فالبلاغة هى مرتقى العلوم وأشرفها، كما أن الإنسان هو أرقى المخلوقات وأعظم الموجودات. فالمرتبة الدنيا من الكلام هى التى تتعلق بوضع الواضع، ثم ما يزال يتدرج من بنية الكلمة إلى أوارخرها حتى يصل في كماله وارتقائه إلى البلاغة وعلومها من معان وبيان وبديع.
وقد رأى مؤلفنا الجرجاني أن كثيراً من العلماء والأعيان خاضوا في تقرير قواعد البلاغة، وقلبوها على وجوهها كافة، ولك يتركوا منها مسألة وقدحوا لها زناد الفكر، واشعلوا فيها وهج الشعور، وأحاطوا بها قدر طاقتهم، ووقفوا لها جل نشاطهم، إلا أن كلامهم على حد تعبيره "لم يكن يخلو من الزيغ والسهو والنسيان" فصرف عنان عزمه إلى ميدان البلاغة وعلومها، فأصدر كتابه "الإشارات والتنبيهات في علم البلاغة"؛ قاصداً إلى تقرير قواعد هذه الصناعة وتحقيقها، ومنتقداً أقوال أهل البلاغة وفرسانها كالخفاجي وعبد القاهر الجرجاني والزمخشري والسكاكس ومعاصره الخطيب القزويني.
وهكذا نجد الجرجاني يتعقب علماء البلاغة ويحيط بآرائهم، فإذا وجدها مصيبة أخذ بها دون أن يعلق عليها أو يعترض سبيلها، وإن وجد فيها أثارة من ميل أو انحراف أو شرود- وكثيراً ما يرى ذلك- يشد عليها عزمه.
