روايةٌ تتأمّل في الحياة وجدواها، يتقاطع فيها الكاتب مع كافكا تارةً، بقدرته على التحوّل والتحويل، ويضاهي ماركيز طوراً، بقدرته على الخوض في تفاصيل نمرّ بها ولا نوليها أدنى اهتمام، لكنّها، على بساطتها، تشكّل في أحيان كثيرة لبّ "الحياة".
رواية؟ إنها أكثر من ذلك. إنها الحياة كلها قدّمها الروائي الألماني الأبرز بين أبناء جيله بأسلوب سلس، وتمكّن المترجم، الحائز جائزة معهد غوتة للترجمة الأدبية عام 2014، من نقلها عن الألمانية بدقة وأمانة وشغف.
